Located south of Hendersonville, the Flat Rock community is famous for its many beautiful estates and historic landmarks dating back to the early 1800's. Flat Rock began about a century and a half ago with large summer estates being built by the affluent Charlestonians, Europeans and prominent plantation owners of the South's low country to escape the sweltering heat.
The entire district became known as "The Little Charleston of the Mountains" and is included in the National register of Historic Places. It serves as home to several attractions such as: The Flat Rock Playhouse-State Theatre of NC; the Carl Sandburg Home; St John's in the Wilderness Episcopal Church; Historic Woodfield Inn and the Singleton Centre art studios; as well as many unique specialty shops. |
